"X-Men fans rejoice: Wolverine has come to life, as a frog. When the comic book warrior faces a fight, metallic blades spring forth from his hand. A new study concludes that certain African frogs are similarly equipped, having sharp, claw-shaped bones that pierce through their own fingertips when the animal is threatened.
Paraphyly of Chinese Amolops (Anura, Ranidae) and phylogenetic position of the rare Chinese frog, Amolops tormotus
Phylogenetic relationships of the tribe Paini (Amphibia, Anura, Ranidae) based on partial sequences of mitochondrial 12s and 16s rRNA genes
Apparently the toads didn't spontaneously explode. Rather, resident crows pecked holes in their body cavities in an attempt to eat their livers. When these punctured individuals swelled defensively in subsequent encounters with crows, their intestines were squirted out of their body cavities.
On a recent KU expedition to the Philippines (March & April, 2005) Rafe Brown and Cameron Siler (with Edmund Rico, Arvin Diesmos, Nonito Antoque, and Arthur King) collected 600 specimens from the central Philippine provinces of Romblon and Mindoro (Occidental and Oriental). Highlights include two new species of Limnonectes (fanged frogs), a possible new species of Kaloula (narrow mouth frog), and two new species of Platymantis (litter frogs). We collected the first genetic samples for frogs of the central Romblon province and obtained the first advertisement call records of these taxa as well.
